“Why Do I Need This List of Keywords?” Having a huge list of keywords that relate to things searched for on the internet is THE single most critical element in all internet marketing. If you want to get clients and move more products for more profits, the Overture search tool is the place to start. Most business use the Overture search tool all wrong and are unable to maximize their profits online (And they waste a lot of time and money doing things the wrong way.) You are going to use your list of keywords and phrases for two purposes:
Whenever you search for any keyword or phrase in Google or Yahoo you’ll see two listings of sites that match the keyword you typed in.
On the left hand side are the natural or organic sites the search engine found. These are sites that are “optimized” for that particular keyword. They contain relevant content relating that particular keyword. So when people talk about “Search Engine Optimization” or SEO they refer to getting highly ranked in this natural listing. That’s why it’s so important to know what keywords people are typing into the search engines – you want to position your site to the best advantage so the search engines find and list you high up.
On the right hand side of a search engines listings is the paid advertising section. You can place a small “classified” ad on Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc. When people click on your ad you are charged anywhere from a few cents to a few dollars (it depends on how popular your keyword is.) So again, this keyword research is the foundation for everything you are going to do to market your business online.
What the Overture Keyword Tool Can Do For You With the Overture keyword tool you’ll discover hundreds of keywords and phrases your target market is typing into Yahoo and other internet search engines. In a way you “listen in” on the conversation going on in their head when they sit in front of their computer wanting more information about a subject relating to your product or service. The key for you is to build a HUGE list of all the keywords or search terms that are related to what it is that you are trying to sell on the internet. Keywords and phrases are words that internet users type into internet search engines when they are looking for something of interest.
The Overture Search Term Suggestion ToolDo you know why Google is the search engine of choice for most people? Research has found that people like the simple clean layout. Well, the overture keyword tool is the same way – it’s layout is simple and easy to use.
There’s a form space with the phrase “Get suggestions for:” above it. All you need to do is type in a word or phrase or any topic and click on the little blue button. What Overture is going to do for you is search its database and come back to show you a whole bunch of related things the word or phrase you typed in. These are the keywords people type into internet search engines. Let me give you a quick example. Let’s say you have a business that sells gardening supplies – this is how you can use this powerful tool. I type in gardening and click on the little blue button to do my search.
What the Overture keyword tool does is brings back a ton of results.
Notice in the grey box above the keywords it says “Count” and “Search term.” The “Count” list tells us how many people typed in that particular keyword or search term over the last month. (Note: Overture only counts the words typed into the Yahoo search engine and its family of search engines like MSN and Alta Vista. It doesn’t count the searches done on Google.) In our example 211,318 people searched for “gardening” in the Yahoo seach engine for the month of May. You’ll notice that the results are listed in descending order by the number of times they were searched for last month. So as we go down this list we’ll see terms and phrases that weren’t searched for quite as much as the ones at the top of the list.
You can see that “vegetable gardening ” was searched for 8,460 of times and “butterfly gardening ” only 376 times.
A Big Mistake Marketers Make… One of the biggest mistakes online marketers make is ignoring low volume keywords. A lot of people just go for the big keywords and phrases like “gardening” because a word like that is getting several thousand searched a month. They think that if they can get a high SEO listing for a term like that (good luck!) or pay a lot of money for a Pay-Per-Click ad that they’ll be rolling in the money. They don’t want to waste their times with these smaller search volume keywords that are searched for only a few hundred times, which may only bring in a handful of visitors. This sounds like a logical idea but it’s a HUGE, HUGE mistake. Here’s why… Sure these lower volumes terms don’t look huge but notice that they are very, very specific. For example "butterfly gardening," I don’t know much about gardening but last month 376 people looked for butterfly gardening so it’s not just a fluke. People want to know something about a very specific term like this. Now, if you sell anything relating to butterfly gardening and you happen to get a PPC ad or a natural listing for when someone types in that phrase, what do you think the chances are that someone would be really interested in buying that? Imagine they go to your web site and see exactly what they are looking for – do you think there’s a good chance they would buy? I would say so! In fact, I would say the chances are much greater someone would buy when they searched for "butterfly gardening" over the person who just searched for “Gardening.” See the difference? Someone searching for just “gardening” could be looking for any number of things relating to gardening. But "butterfly gardening" - that’s someone on a mission! What qualifies a prospect is how specific the term they are searching for, how clearly they define themselves, how targeted they are. So if you’re selling supplies for butterfly gardening you’ll want to be listed for that exact phrase because you’ll end up being listed for a lot more of people searching for this, than you would for someone who just types in gardening because it’s very specific. Having said that, you still want to use ALL of the related keywords for your product or service that you’re trying to market and sell on the internet. Just don’t pass up the huge opportunities that the smaller volume words bring you.
Build a Big List of Keywords When you have a big list of keywords you can edit down later if you want, but start with the biggest list you can. So what you need to do is a little bit of brainstorming. You have to get a little creative along this process to think of all the related things that someone who is interested in what you may have to sell would be searching for on the internet. As you gather all your keywords and phrases you can cut and paste them into an Excel document for easy management. Using the Overture keyword tool is going to do much of the work for you. It’s going to actually tell you things that people are searching for that you probably didn’t know of. One way to do this is a technique called “Digging Deeper.”
Digging DeeperLet’s go even deeper why this tool is so powerful. We typed in gardening and got back al these terms that people are searching for on the internet search engines. You’ll notice that as you place the mouse over each of the results that it’s a link – you can click on that search term too.
This is going to actually do a search in the database as if we had originally typed in "gardening tool" just like we did for “gardening.” What its going to return is all the related keywords and phrases that people have been typing into the search engine that are related to gardening tool. So by doing a sub-search off the main result quilting we can drill even further into what people are searching for.
If you were selling anything related to gardening tools, you’d want to compile these search terms onto your master keyword list. Now when we look at the words for this term "gardening tool", you can see some pretty interesting results. You get a lot out of your Overture keyword research. Not only from a competitive research standpoint, but just from keeping an eye on your market – on what your prospects are currently looking for on the internet. You can see what they are currently looking to buy. As you use this tool more you’ll be fascinated by what people look for online. You are now have a great advantage over your competition to position yourself in your market so you can sell more products and get more clients through the internet.
